Here you go ♥ Hopefully it's fluffy enough! (and okay enough. first time writing FFXIII 'fic orz)

=======================

"You're supposed to be asleep." Lightning didn't even look away from the fire. She knew who was standing behind her, he'd been rolling around and pretending to be asleep for the past hour.

Hope looked off to the side. "I... can't."

She heard him fidget in place. He was probably just standing there still, one hand repeatedly clenching and relaxing at his side. She wasn't sure when the habit of his started - must have been sometime around when they arrived on Gran Pulse. At least, that's when she began to notice.

"Hm." She didn't move, didn't say anything else to him. She only waited. ... And he did exactly what she thought he would - he took a seat next to her. He looked up at her face, considering, and then did his best to follow her gaze into the fire. Again, she wated for the inevitable...

"What are you thinking about?"

... that. She sighed. This was becoming routine. "Nothing. Just listening."

"Oh." Silence, for a moment, before he spoke again, "What do you hear tonight?"

She couldn't help it. The corner of her mouth twitched upward just a bit. But if it was a smile, it was gone before anyone would be able to tell. "Same as last night. Night birds, a few insects. Nothing dangerous right now." She paused. "You're really supposed to be sleeping."

"Light..."

"Tomorrow's going to be long. You need to rest."

"I'm telling you, I can't! I've tried!"

She sighed, mildly exasperated, and shook her head. "This is the third night in a row." She glanced over at him, only to find him looking back at her - eyes heavy with sleep deprivation, but pleading nonetheless. She tried not to let it affect her. "Sleep, Hope." His expression took a turn toward defeated. She'd sent him back to sleep the past two nights in a row, but apparently that hadn't worked. Here he was, again.

Well... now what?

Another sigh - this one less exasperated and more resigned. She looked back to the fire to avoid having to see the expression on the boy's face, but... she relented. "Then stay up."

"Huh?"

She nodded, once. "Keep watch with me."

She waited patiently while he stared at her, blinked a few times, tried to make it register in his mind that he really did just hear her say that. She could practically feel when he smiled at her, she didn't need to look.

And an hour later, when his head was in her lap and he was sleeping peacefully, she smiled right back at him.
